The Great Bhagavata Mela Tradition, is the only surviving link in Tamilnadu which connects us with ancient Sanskrit Theatre. This is a rare form of temple-theatre art which is presented in a unique blend of bhakti, music, dance and drama in vogue for over 5 centuries.
The Bhagavata Mela Natakams, composed in chaste Telugu by Melattur Venkatarama Shastry are performed annually. These natakams are performed, in adherence to Natya Veda, in the Sannidhi of Lord Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Melattur Village, as a part of Sri Narasimha Jayanthi Vasantotsav.
