Sabari Moksham, the fourth episode of the Ramayana series, opens with an overview of how life in exile is for Rama, Lakshmana and Sita. During their wanderings, they meet Jatayu, the giant eagle who was a friend of Dasharatha. He promises them all help in looking after Sita in the rakshasa-infested forests. Soon after, Rama, Lakshmana and Sita receive an unwelcome visit from Ravana’s sister, Surpanakha, who is captivated by Rama’s beauty. Following Rama’s rebuff, she transfers her attention to Lakshmana and exits the scene after being humiliated by the latter.
Ravana is incensed after hearing of his sister’s humiliation and sends the rakshasa, Maricha, to Rama’s hermitage in the form of a golden deer. Sita covets the beautiful deer and sends Rama in pursuit of it, and soon, Rama is drawn far from the hermitage.
Sensing the deception, Rama fires an arrow and Maricha expires with a loud cry imitating Rama’s voice. A panic-stricken Sita forces Lakshmana to go in search of Rama.
At this juncture, Ravana comes dressed as a hermit and abducts Sita. Rama and Lakshmana return to their abode and find Sita missing. Realising that she is nowhere in the vicinity, they go in search of her. On the way, they meet the noble Jatayu, in his final moments, as he lies there wounded (by Ravana) during his efforts to save Sita. The grief-stricken brothers offer him moksha and proceed, arriving at the dwelling of Sabari, a devout recluse of lowly birth. She offers her respects to them and proceeds to serve them roots and fruits which she has specially handpicked. Rama’s visit to her hermitage had been foretold by her gurus and after serving him, she requests his permission to shuffle off her mortal coil and attain freedom from birth and death.
