In Choodamani Pradanam, the fifth episode of the Ramayana series, Rama, lamenting the disappearance of his wife Sita, goes in search of her with his brother Lakshmana. On the way, they meet the monkey king Sugreeva and his minister Hanuman. Sugreeva is beset with problems of his own. His own kingdom has been usurped by his brother Vali. And his wife, Ruma, has been abducted by Vali. Rama kills Vali and restores to Sugreeva his kingdom and wife. Hanuman crosses the sea and goes to Lanka in search of Sita. She is held captive by Ravana in Ashoka Vanam and is threatened with death unless she accepts Ravana as her husband. Hanuman delivers to her Rama’s ring by which she is able to identify him as Rama’s envoy. He then proceeds to destroy the Ashoka Vanam in order to secure an audience with Ravana. At the court of Ravana, Hanuman’s tail is set on fire as a gesture of humiliation. But Hanuman escapes from his captors and sets fire to Lanka before returning to Rama. There, he presents to Rama the choodamani (jewel worn on the crest of the head) given to him by Sita.
