A mythical tributary, a life-giving source, a symbol of knowledge—the Saraswati was one of the main rivers mentioned in the ancient Vedic poems of Rig Veda, believed to have disappeared into the ground over time. Today, only the legends remain. Tracing the history of this waterway that has been erased by time and natural forces, Saraswati Antarvahini is the creative result of archaeological, anthropological and cultural findings, articulated through a dance narrative that captures the pulse of a river so closely intertwined with life in the Indian sub-continent.
Saraswati as an idea is timeless and can never be captured within a given space. No sectarian belief can claim this thought. Only the particular instance of such a universal idea gets manifested in the physical realm. The by-gone wisdom of the people offered a naama and rupa to this idea. They named it Saraswati so they conquered it through their memory and imagination. If it flows through the terrain with a physical source, course and destination it is called as river or nadi Saraswati. If it could be contained in a stone or wood through a ritualistic installation it is called pratishta Saraswati. If it could be manifested in words it is called kavya Saraswati. If the same idea is enacted, where the dancers lend their bodies it is called natya Saraswati – Antarvahini.
